Drumming

Drumming

The drum in lion dancing symbolizes the lion’s heartbeat, setting the rhythm for the dance and contributing to the overall ambiance. Each martial school possesses a unique drumming style, and specific beats correspond to different lion movements or routines.

The gong and cymbals, on the other hand, represent the lion’s thoughts and complement the drum to create a harmonious and complete routine. Traditionally, the combined sounds of the drum, gongs, and cymbals are believed to ward off evil spirits, making this aspect particularly significant during Chinese New Year celebrations. The gong, distinguished by its high-pitched sound, is usually singular in each performance, while multiple cymbals generate a lower background noise.
